Job description
Position: Dance Teacher
History
Williamsburg Charter High School (WCHS) is a high-performing, public charter high school located in Brooklyn, New York. WCHS opened in August 2004 as the first Chancellor-authorized charter high school in the City of New York with a ninth-grade class of 267 students. The school’s mission is to unite youth, families, staff, teachers, and the community by providing young people with the tools necessary to make sense of the world and prepare them to become skilled workers and literate citizens of the world. Young people will accomplish this through their participation in a rigorous and demanding liberal arts education that includes language, literature, writing, science, history, mathematics, the arts, technology, and exploration in disciplines designed to teach fairness, justice, respect, and compassion for themselves and others, as well as the skills of critical thinking, communication and research.
Williamsburg Charter High School provides a broad liberal arts academic program to the high-school-age youth of north Brooklyn. School programs are individualized to connect to each student’s particular level of development, including English Language Learners and students with Special Education Services. Further, WCHS provides supportive relationships with faculty, extended instructional periods, and opportunities after-school and on Saturdays for additional academic support. Social and emotional support is also available to students to ensure their non-academic needs are addressed. Students are accepted to WCHS through a random lottery with no minimum requirements, tests, or auditions required to gain entrance, and, as a public charter school, there is no tuition.

Performing Arts at WCHS
Williamsburg Charter High School's Performing Arts Department strives to combine dance, theatre, and music to connect students with the world around them. We ask students to think critically about their art forms and to become aware of the ways in which their actions, their bodies, and their talents influence the people around them. Many of our courses culminate in performances; all invite significant student participation in the creative process. We have built brand new, state-of-the-art facilities for our dance studio and our recording studio, and are seeking to expand our department to meet student demand.
Our growing department currently comprises Dance, Musical Theatre, and Choir classes as well as an introductory course in our brand new recording studio. We are seeking candidates who can join our collaborative team in one or several of the above disciplines, whose interest in pedagogy matches their passion for the performing arts, and who are open to finding creative ways to share that passion with our talented students.
We are currently seeking a full-time Dance Teacher with professional artistic and educational experience. The teacher should have experience teaching all genres and styles of dance, possibly including but not limited to: modern, ballet, jazz, hip hop, Latin, musical theatre, cultural dance forms, choreography, and improvisation. Applicant must have a strong interest in collaboration with the music and theatre teachers and should demonstrate a commitment to building a comprehensive performing arts program that builds upon both performance and 21st-century learning skills.
Dance courses include the study of various dance forms, creative exploration through the development of choreographic and improvisational skills, and a strong connection to literacy and the Common Core Standards. The teacher must show interest in interdisciplinary learning initiatives, a desire to bring dance to the larger school community, and to connect students to dance opportunities throughout the greater New York City area.
